Four Japanese mobile operators, including NTT DoCoMo, KDDI, SoftBank Mobile, and Emobile, are expected to spend a combined amount of around one trillion Yen (US$10.1 billion; US$1=99.0 Yen) on 3.9G LTE (Long Term Evolution) network establishment, Nikkei reported on May 4, 2009. The four mobile operators were expected to submit their applications for the 3.9G license by May 7, and Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications is scheduled to announce the license winners in summer this year. NTT DoCoMo plans to invest up to 400 million Yen (US$4.0 million) in LTE infrastructure and expects to commence LTE service in 2010. KDDI, SoftBank Mobile, and Emobile, meanwhile, have set their goals for service commencement between 2011 and 2012.
